IPTV and Digital
Signage,
We
have recently undertaken a project to provide digital signage for a major
international bank based in the city. They had a legacy system (Scala)
our brief was to evaluate Scala and emerging technologies to provide a
best of bread solution to digital signage.
The main goal of the project was to broadcast messages to the staff who
are working in a stressful and busy environment. These staff don’t
have time to browse the company Intranet, it was decided that a good approach
was to broadcast timely relevant messages to the area, which could be
viewed in a casual manor without detracting from the work.
The channel can be seen as an extension of the intranet, providing snippets
for people to view, and leading people to go to the Intranet for more
information on a given story.
The channel should be interesting but not to distracting, so we had quite
a lot of aspects to consider when working with this client.
The whole area of Digital signage is exploding, in the last 12 months
we have seen lots of new entrants to this area.
There are two approaches to Digital signage :-
Client - Server
Purely IT based solution where a central server sends data to a number
of PC's on the network, which displays content on the screen when scheduled
to do so.
TV head end - Set Top box (STB)
We see this as the emerging technology which has major advantages over
the client/server approach. Basically creating a TV head end and transmitting
TV over the LAN using IPTV. This is very much a merging of IT and TV.
The approach we suggested with our last client involved the TV approach,
once we pitched the idea they were sold. Their own internal TV station,
with the flexibility and expandability of a TV station.
We offered the project management and consultancy and brought the whole
project together, on time and within budget. Many internal challenges
were encountered and over come, as with any new technology, change is
always difficult.
This is only an outline of the services we can now offer. We have experience
of implementing a TV Style digital signage project within a Major world
wide bank. Currently not many organizations are taking this approach,
but this is starting to change.
